Just something I thought may turn into a game, but I got sidetracked by my little 2D physics model I was playing around with instead, so I may make a game using that.
There is a chance I may come back and add some gameplay stuff in at a later date, and fix the AI facing randomly problem....maybe.
Nice, you've done some pretty good work on this (though 3d in Flash will never be as clean as the 2d stuff). Btw, how's the AI done? I'll trust in you that it isn't just a recorded route, and I'd like to get pointers on how to get cars driving reasonably tight circuits...

It is based on the 2D minimap, which makes the AI easier, as its just moving the 2D dots on the minimap. The hard part is then taking that and making it look cool 3D.
I had planned for the AI to use either a complex waypoint system, and choose the best waypoint to go around the other cars (even though no collision detection on cars was planned, just going around for good looks).
Alternatively (though only if the track was curved) you could have the dot on the minimap have 2 points in front of it that are tested, 1 on each side, and if one hits outside the track you turn the car to get it back inside the track, but this ends up not being as good in my opinion, as the cars tend to always be in the same place, where as with a lot of waypoints, the AI can randomly go a number of different places on the track, and go around other cars.
However, at the stage I was at, I did not have the large number of waypoints, just enough for it to go around (it was the testing stage), and because there was not lots of points yet, I hadn't done the car avoiding thing, so at the moment, although the system was in place for it to be more, it is effectively a recorded route.
Ah, so it's got potential but not been coded for it yet... Luckily I've worked out my own potential way for car AI since posting that though, so I'll not be needing to copy your system (other than by coincidence)
